Officer suffers broken leg amid series of inmate on inmate fights in Elmira Correctional Facility

A correction officer was left with a broken leg after a series of inmate-on-inmate fights Thursday.

At 12:45 p.m., officials say an officer saw five inmates fighting in the laundry corridor. Several orders were given by officers, but the inmates reportedly refused to stop until an officer used pepper spray. The inmates were taken to the infirmary.

During treatment, one inmate reportedly turned over an X-Actor blade that had a plastic pen tube as a make-shift handle. Three inmates were placed in a special housing unit following treatment and all five inmates involved face disciplinary charges. Two officers were taken to a local hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Minutes later, officers say a second fight broken out between three inmates in the same laundry corridor. Officers reportedly gave the inmates orders to stop fighting and they complied.

Officers then conducted pat searches of all the inmates in the corridor. They say they recovered an X-Acto blade in the pants pocket of an inmate that was not involved in the fight. He was placed in a special housing unit.
