17-year-old arrested after car chase from West Elmira to Big Flats

A 17-year-old was arrested following a police chase that started in West Elmira and ended in Big Flats.

According to the West Elmira Police Department, around 11:30 p.m. Sunday, officers say they saw a stolen vehicle driving in the 900 block of West Gray Street. Officers tried to stop the vehicle on West Church Street, but the driver took off.

The pursuit reportedly continued on State Route 352 into the Town of Big Flats. A deputy from the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office in the area utilized Stop Sticks, which the vehicle hit, causing one of the tires to deflate.

The driver tried to continue west on State Route 352. While trying to turn right onto the Curren Road Extension, the vehicle wrecked into an embankment and the driver was subsequently taken into custody.

The 17-year-old was charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Fourth Degree, Unlawful Fleeing a Police Officer in the Third Degree, Reckless Driving, Speeding and Driving Without a License.
