Steuben County man charged with DWI, having open alcohol with 5-month-old in car

Livingston County Sheriff's deputies arrested a man from Steuben County on DWI charges with a child in the car.

Deputies said they stopped a car Monday on West Lake Road in Groveland for a traffic violation. Casey Barrett, 27, was behind the wheel with a 5-month-old child in the back seat when deputies pulled the car over.

While talking with Barrett, deputies suspected he was drunk and gave him sobriety tests, which he failed. An open container of alcohol was found in the car, as well, deputies said.

Breathalyzer tests showed Barrett had a BAC of 0.12 percent.

Barrett was arrested and charged with felony DWI since he had a previous DWI-related conviction in 2015. With his six driver's license suspensions and the baby in the back seat of the car, deputies said Barrett was also charged with felony aggravated DWI under Leandra's law, felony first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, endangering the welfare of a child, consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle, and failure to restrain a passenger of the age of four.
