About two and a half hours prior to first pitch on Tuesday, the Mets gathered into the SunTrust Park visiting clubhouse for a team meeting. Throughout this season, the Mets have held various meetings for various reasons, yet this one seemed weightier than manager Mickey Callaway’s usual pep talks. Less than a day earlier, after the Mets dropped their fourth game in five days, Callaway admitted, “We just stunk.”
Multiple roster moves followed and then the meeting, which had been scheduled hours in advance. The reason seemed obvious: rapidly sliding out of playoff contention, the Mets wanted to muster whatever reserves they could find to mount a climb out of this hole.
It helped that reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom was on the mound to back up those words, and back them up he did. Pitching into the ninth inning, deGrom limited the Braves to five hits in a 10-2 victory the Mets sorely needed.
