Cashless tolling is coming for the New York State Thruway, Governor Cuomo announced.
The governor’s office says the Thruway Authority Board of Directors selected a Design-Build team which will work to install cashless tolling along the Thruway.
The cashless tolls are expected to be in place by 2020.
Cashless tolling is currently in place in the lower Hudson Valley Region and the Grand Island Bridges. Under the latest phase of the project, nearly 450 miles of the Thruway’s ticketed system will be converted to cashless.
Construction is expected to begin in the late summer or early fall. Current toll booths will be removed in phases.
“New York State is making historic investments, building a modern transportation network worthy of the 21st Century and beyond,” Governor Cuomo said in a statement. “By investing in technology like cashless tolling, we are creating a safer, greener and less congested Thruway system and ensuring our transportation infrastructure is capable of supporting New York’s growing economy.”
