Emma Sroka, of Auburn, passed her first onstage test at the Scripps National Spelling Bee Tuesday.
Sroka, speller No. 338 in the competition, was asked to spell "pelog." The five-letter word is defined as "a heptatonic tuning employed for Javanese gamelans consisting of unequal intervals from which various pentatonic scales are drawn," according to Merriam-Webster.
