South Seneca sewer project topic of meeting

Seneca County is interested in consolidating two wastewater treatment facilities in the south end of the county as a way to correct permit violations in both plants. Before that project can move forward, county officials needs to determine if the closing of Hillside Children’s Center in Varick and uncertainty over the future of the Five Points Correctional Facility in Romulus will impact those plans.

A special meeting has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Wednesday in the county office building to discuss the south-end sewer situation. Supervisors from the towns of Fayette, Varick, Romulus, Ovid, Lodi and Covert; Board of Supervisors Public Works Committee chairman Don Trout; county Industrial Development Agency Executive Director Bob Aronson; county Public Works Commissioner Sam Priem; county Manager Mitch Rowe; and a representative of Barton & Loguidice have been invited.

The IDA owns the property on the former Seneca Army Depot where Hillside is located. Hillside leases the former barracks from the IDA.

Hillside, a residential treatment center for youth, is set to close by the end of the year.
