Forgotten for much of this season, buried on the Mets’ depth chart, Juan Lagares has been a footnote to the team’s season to date. Perhaps no longer. Pressed into increased playing time due to a spate of outfield injuries, Lagares ripped a go-ahead three-run double in the eighth inning on Wednesday, leading the Mets to a 6-1 win over the Nationals.
In danger of being shut out, the Mets rallied with a hit and a walk against Nationals reliever Kyle Barraclough. Washington then turned to closer Sean Doolittle, who plunked Carlos Gomez to bring up Lagares. With the bases loaded, Lagares sliced a double into the gap in left-center, plating three.
Two batters later, Brandon Nimmo’s roster replacement, Rajai Davis, hit a three-run homer in the first plate appearance of his Mets career.
