Entering this season, it would not have been outlandish to predict that Pete Alonso might set a Mets rookie record for home runs before the All-Star break. It would have been less believable to think he’d do so with seven weeks until the break.
Alonso’s record-breaking 16th home run sailed over the left-field foul pole at Citi Field, tying Tuesday’s game against the Nationals and giving Amed Rosario a chance to win it in the ninth, beating out a walk-off, infield single to plate the winning run in a 6-5 victory.
