Growing up one of the few black kids in Brooktondale, attending Candor schools, outgoing Ithaca Police Department chief Pete Tyler will retire from the force this month. He’s remembered as a kid who got along with everyone.
His family and teachers noticed that Pete liked to help people and he excelled at sports. “I liked playing sports which brought people together,” he says. “We all learned as we played as a team. I also felt connected when we pitched at school activities, [and] community events like parades, fairs, concerts, and dances.”
