New York may soon become the 30th state to require adults to wear safety belts in the rear seat.
Traffic-safety advocates have been urging state lawmakers to mandate rear-seat safety belt use for more than a decade, arguing that New York’s current law allowing those over the age of 16 to go unrestrained contributes to highway deaths.
After years of stalling, the bill finally seems to be moving toward a vote — perhaps as soon as Wednesday.
The Senate Transportation Committee approved the measure Monday, clearing one of its final parliamentary hurdles before the full chamber votes on it. The bill has cruised through committees in the Assembly, too.
“It’s a common sense piece of legislation,” said Sen. David Carlucci, D-Clarkstown, Rockland County, who sponsors the bill.
