Ontario County’s only port on the Erie Canal gets a closer look Saturday as The Landmark Society of Western New York plans a walking tour of the Town of Manchester hamlet of Port Gibson.
The free event, which starts at 10 a.m., is in celebration of National Preservation Month.
Those interested in taking part should meet at the Port Gibson Fire Hall, 2939 Greig St. The event will take place rain or shine.
Landmark Society Architectural Research Coordinator Cynthia Howk will lead the tour, pointing out some of the best-preserved buildings and telling the hamlet’s unique story as Ontario County’s only Erie Canal port.
The Landmark Society said the tour “will provide an opportunity for a community education of Port Gibson, a spot that has experienced much change over the years. Participants will have a chance to learn more about the history, architecture and development of the area.”
Stops on the walk include the Port Gibson Fire Hall, the cemetery, former canal basin and the hamlet’s four corners.
