More dead eels have been found at Hemlock Lake.
They are the same species found there in recent weeks. The Asian Swamp Eel is an invasive species not native to the area that has already disrupted ecosystems down south.
The DEC says it will be monitoring Hemlock and Canadice Lakes. Both supply water to the City of Rochester.
As 13WHAM previously reported, the DEC began investigating after an FLCC student reported finding several eels while fishing at Hemlock Lake.
The DEC says it’s not yet clear how the eels got into the lake, although it is believed they may have been human-introduced.
The City of Rochester says it is aware eels were found, but added there is no threat to the drinking water supply. It says it continually works with the DEC to make sure the drinking water supply is safe.
