A rapid rise in Lake Ontario water levels has caused property owners and local governments on the shoreline to step up preparations for possible flooding.
Lake Ontario's level was well above its long-term average from late fall through early spring, though by mid-April the gap between the two had fallen to an unremarkable 7 inches.
But since then, a combination of healthy rainfall and downstream conditions that prompted a dramatic reduction in the amount of water being drained from the lake has caused the water level to jet upward again.
The lake level was about 11 inches above the long-term average on Thursday — and approaching weather systems promise persistent rainfall that will ratchet the lake level up more.
