Cuomo: Felons in prison shouldn’t be allowed to vote

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo says he opposes giving felons in prison the right to vote.

Appearing on CNN’s “New Day,” the Democrat said he disagrees with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, who says he supports giving the right to vote back to felons serving prison sentences.

Last year Cuomo issued an executive order restoring the voting rights of paroled felons, saying it’s another way to help them rebuild their lives and reintegrate into the community. But he said Tuesday that offenders are still paying a debt to society while serving their sentences and shouldn’t be allowed to cast a ballot.

Sanders’ comments supporting voting rights for imprisoned felons came Monday during a televised CNN town hall featuring Democratic candidates for president.
