Nothing found in police drug sweep at Auburn Jr. and Sr. high schools

The Auburn Police Department, with the help of other area law enforcement, conducted a drug sweep of Auburn's schools Monday morning.

The unannounced searches of Auburn High School and Auburn Junior High School are done annually, said APD Sgt. Greg Dann, who oversees the School Resource Officer program for the Auburn Enlarged City School District. He said school administration is aware of the searches, but they are unannounced to parents, students and staff.

The search was coordinated with APD's K-9 Unit, which includes one dog, and was assisted by a Cayuga County Sheriff's Office canine, three Onondaga County Sheriff's dogs, and one canine from the Saratoga Springs Police Department.



When law enforcement enters a school, Dann said the building is put into shelter-in-place and teachers can continue their teaching while SROs or school administrators assigned to certain areas of the building accompany officers and canines.

The searches look a bit different each year, Dann said, but this week included sweeping all the lockers at both schools and some classrooms at the high school. To search classrooms, he said students are pulled from the room but asked to leave their belongings for a canine sweep. Some years they do this with buses, he added.
