Little Sodus Bay ready for summer, west pier partially closed

A popular summer spot, Little Sodus Bay in Cayuga County, will be seeing changes this summer.

After the piers that protect the bay from Lake Ontario started showing signs of damage, the Army Corps of Engineers has stepped in. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Buffalo District’s technical team completed a damage assessment of the Fair Haven east and west piers last Thursday that will inform the design for temporary actions to prevent further damages.

“Until the pier is fully repaired it is recommended that the public stay away from the damage,” said Lex Barker, project manager for the Army Corps of Engineers.

An estimated $3 million in federal funding would be needed for a permanent repair to the damaged area. The Mayor of Fair Haven, James Basile, says though part of the west pier is closed, summer should be normal.

“Don’t cancel your reservations. Don’t cancel your trips. Don’t cancel your camping. Everything is going to be as it should be,” Basile said. “The channel is 250 feet wide. We have had barges in here doing dredging. I would just say stay away from it and give people room to do their work.”
