New York lawmakers have a new proposal for statewide regulations for home-sharing platforms such as Airbnb.
Legislation announced Tuesday would limit New Yorkers to listing a single property on home-sharing sites, and prohibit short-term rentals in affordable housing units. The measure would also require shot-term rentals to be registered with the state.
The bill would replace rules that subjected some people who offered their homes as short-term rentals to steep fines.
The two Democrats sponsoring the bill – Sen. James Skoufis and Assemblyman Joseph Lentol – say it balances the need for home sharing regulations with the reality that many New Yorkers use short-term rentals as a way to make some few extra bucks.
