Village of Victor passes referendum to replace volunteer fire department

The Village of Victor voters decided to replace their fire department Tuesday night.

The referendum was to dissolve the village volunteer fire department and replace it with an independent fire district. The referendum passed by a vote of 210 to 94.

At the heart of the issue is the lack of volunteers and a growing workload. The chief of the fire department has long argued for a joint fire district with the town of Victor. Many say the fire department needs more paid firefighters.

Now that the referendum has passed, the plan is for voters to elect commissioners for the new fire district. The district would serve the town and village, except for the fishers fire district. The commissioners would determine the budget, including any cost to taxpayers.
