Patient Safety Awareness Week (held this year March 11-17) is an annual recognition event intended to encourage everyone to learn more about patient, employee and health care safety. During this week, Auburn Community Quality Management staff, nurses and other health care professionals, sought to advance important discussions on patient safety. The activities included educational opportunities that highlight any current initiatives or new initiatives that can inspire action to improve the safety of the health care system — for patients and the workforce. This is an annual event at the hospital and serves as a platform for growing awareness about patient safety and recognizing the work already being done.
This year’s event included the Safety Fair held Wednesday was attended by over 150 employees from various departments at The hospital. The Safety Fair included displays and educational tools that focused on fire safety, emergency preparedness, 2019 National Patient Safety Goals, Language line, ligature risk, breast-feeding, proper blood pressure techniques, bariatrics and care of the post-operative patient, high level disinfection and infection control practices, proper procedures within our laboratory, safe patient handling, stroke update, organ donation, case management updates, environment of care, housekeeping practices and dietary updates.
“We cover a variety of initiatives, and it's a great way for colleagues to learn more about what's happening outside their own departments and to highlight how both staff and patients stay safe,” stated Christine DeProspero, risk management specialist at Auburn Community Hospital.
