A local nursing home at the center of a year-long News10NBC investigation now has a bed bug problem.
Patients and employees tell News10NBC that Sodus Rehabilitation and Nursing Center is being fumigated this week.
While it’s not totally uncommon for a long-term care facility to run into periodic issues with bed bugs, considering all the problems News10NBC has been reporting on over the last year, it’s one more thing patients have to deal with.
Three separate families tell News10NBC Investigative Reporter Jennifer Lewke that bed bug sniffing dogs were brought in and their loved ones were moved from their normal rooms earlier this week so certain areas could be fumigated.
Employees are also bagging their coats and purses upon entering the facility to avoid carrying the bed bugs home with them.
Under the law, Sodus Rehab is not required to report a bed bug infestation to the New York State Department of Health but a spokesman for the agency says the department is aware of the issue because it has received complaints from residents.
Guidelines developed by the National Pest Management Association for medical facilities say that if bed bugs are discovered, a patient should immediately be removed from the room but their belongings and any medical equipment they use should stay until a professional is brought in to inspect and treat the problem.
News10NBC reached out to the new administrator in Sodus to see whether those protocols are being followed.
