Two people are without a home after a fire during the early-morning hours on Tuesday.
Auburn Assistant Fire Chief Bill DiFabio told the Auburn Citizen that the call for a fire at 69 Thornton Ave. came in around 1:14 a.m. A 95-year-old female resident was woken by smoke detectors, exited the house and went to her neighbors’ home, DiFabio said. DiFabio said it was initially reported that a resident of the home, the woman’s 60-year-old son, couldn’t be found in the house.
Officials say more than a dozen personnel responded from the city and put the fire out within a few minutes.
The man who was initially unaccounted for was also located. Officials say he wasn’t home at the time of the fire.
Officials noted that the community stepped up to help the family displaced by the fire. Neighbors are assisting with them.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but improper disposal of a cigarette may have been a leading cause.
DiFabio said smoke detectors had a huge role in keeping this family in-tact.
“This just shows the importance of good smoke detectors. They alerted the occupants so they could get to safety. She did all the right things,” DiFabio said.
