Salvation Army provides 400 baskets, 2,300 meals locally

Officers at the local Salvation Army of Geneva report that the organization assisted families and elderly households in need this past Christmas season with the assistance of the generous support of the community.

The Army and its volunteers provided over 400 holiday food baskets and served over 2,300 prepared meals to seniors and families throughout the month of December.

“The need in Geneva is significant during the holidays. They don’t always know where their next meal is coming from and they are torn between providing food for their families and making Christmas a happy time for their children,” said Salvation Army Lt. Nydia Martinez. “Families line up at our front door, sometimes with the line going out to the street. It takes an army of donors and volunteers to meet these needs. We’re privileged to have that support from the community.”

The local Army received food donations from individuals, FoodLink, area businesses, including prepared food from the NYS Thruway rest stops.

In addition to the food assistance, the Salvation Army distributed just over 1,000 toys to area children to ensure there would be presents under their trees. Books, hats and gloves were also given out to over 355 children this year.

“Local businesses and community partners that hosted Angel Trees and everyone who fulfilled an Angel Tree tag allowed us to make Christmas a little brighter this season,” Lt. Martinez added. “Without their help, none of this would have been possible.”
