Police are warning local residents about a rental property scam, which has been reported by several individuals over the last several days and weeks.
According to police, the suspected individual has assumed the identity of a local Penn Yan homeowner who is selling a rental property, and then takes payment with various types of gift cards – such as Google Play, Walmart, and Apple iTunes.
The Penn Yan Police Department is advising residents to meet with prospective landlords before agreeing to pay any amount of money. They also advise signing a rental agreement before any transfers take place.
They say that if the public has any questions about this, or other suspected scams – they can contact the Penn Yan Police Department.
Police are working with the property owner and working to identify the suspect involved.
Scams like this have been reported at different times throughout the Finger Lakes region.
