As the winter weather deteriorated Wednesday and bitter cold continued into Thursday, the number of calls to AAA skyrocketed.
On an average January day, AAA will typically take 1,650 calls for service. As of 1 p.m. Thursday, AAA had already surpassed that number of calls for the area it covers in the Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse regions.
In the Buffalo metro area alone, 635 calls were received by AAA on Thursday. In the Rochester metro area, there were 340 calls. More than 200 calls came from central New York, as well.
Most of the calls are related to vehicle batteries, according to Elizabeth Carey, Director of Public Relations & Corporate Communications for AAA.
AAA recommends avoiding unnecessary travel and keeping children home when school is not in session. Drivers are asked to clear snow off of their vehicles before they arrive for a service call.
