Two of the biggest games of the night in Wayne-Finger Lakes boys high school basketball featured a battle at the top of the Finger Lakes East standings with Newark visiting Geneva and a match-up in Wayne County between Gananda and Lyons with first place on the line.
In Geneva, Newark jumped out to an 11-point halftime lead behind the hot shooting of Kyle Martinez, who nailed 3 threes en route to 11 points and a 33-22 advantage at the intermission.
Geneva mounted a comeback in the second half, capped by a three-pointer by Jagger Kerr mid-way through the 4th to give the Panthers a 2-point lead. Devin Agosto hit a short baseline jumper to tie it back up and Mason VanDemortel scored 4 of his 8 points down the stretch as the Reds held on for the win.
Leading scores for Newark were Martinez and Agosto, each with 11 points. VanDeMortel finished with 8 and Jayden Peters had 7. For Geneva, Reid Patchett and Liam Ryan had 10 points apiece. Patchett also had 9 rebounds and Ryan handed out 6 assists while Dante Reid blocked 3 shots. Geneva falls to 9-5 and 1.5 games back of league leading Wayne who defeated Mynderse on Tuesday night. Newark improves to 9-2 and remains 2 games back of the FL East lead.
In Lyons, the Gananda Blue Panthers jumped out to a 9-2 lead to open the game before Lyons stormed back to take a one-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Then, in a wild second period, Lyons outscored Gananda 34-23 behind 14 second quarter points from Justice Smith. The Lyons would cruise in the second half, eventually winning 94-75. Justice Smith finished with 33 points while Gananda senior Jayden Castrechini matched his season high output with 31.
