Should seat belts on school buses be required?

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is pushing to make it a requirement that students on school buses wear seat belts.

All school districts, as of right now in the state. are required to have them built in, but it is optional for children to wear them. In his State of the State address Tuesday, Gov. Cuomo said he wants to making wearing seat belts a requirement.

Mothers we spoke to said school bus safety is always on the back of their minds.

“I think seat belts should be a mandatory thing I mean whether the age I mean it doesn’t matter anything could ever happen in an accident, you can’t prevent that,” Christina Crews said.

“It terrifies me, I remember being in accidents on the bus when I was a kid, I don’t remember having to wear a seat belt,” Jessica Reynolds said.

The Baldwinsville School District has 114 school buses that all have seat belts built in. Director of Transportation Dana Nelson said it is up to parents to decide whether their child wears it.
