James R. Shreve passed peacefully on December 29th, 2018, in Lansdale, PA. Born in Plainfield, NJ in 1926, he was the son of John Donald and Helen Shreve of Fanwood, NJ.
He graduated Scotch Plains HS (1945), where he was First Team All-State selection in football and basketball, and an inductee into Scotch Plains Hall of Fame (2006). At Syracuse University, he played football (48-50) and basketball (45-46).
“Coach Shreve” also had an amazing football coaching career: Moravian College, George Washington, Lehigh, Syracuse, Iowa State, Canastota HS and Cornell. While at Lehigh, the Engineers won their first Lambert Cup trophy in 1957. In 1959, he was also appointed Head Lacrosse Coach, where he guided Lehigh to a National Championship. In the fall of 59, Shreve started at Syracuse as Head Freshmen Football coach (record 36-4) and Recruiting Director. That first year, the Orange went 11-0 and won the National Championship. He coached legendary players Ernie Davis, Larry Czsonka, Floyd Little, John Mackey, Tom Coughlin and Cliff Ensley.
Jim was a lifelong Cubs fan and a 20-year Rotarian. He hosted a weekly sports TV show, “The Jim Shreve Show”, on WHEN-TV, and served in the US. Army (46-47).
At Syracuse, he met the love of his life, Dorian Lloyd, of Buffalo, NY, and they had a loving marriage of 68 years. In retirement, Jim and Dorian lived in Ithaca, NY, for 35 years. Jim is survived by Dorian, sons James (Beverly) and Mike (Janie), sister Barb Kelly; 6 grandchildren: Justin, Kate, Suzy, Vanessa, Natalie and Michael; and 9 great grandchildren: Vesper, Evan, Lansing, Easton, Silas, Leighton, Bailey, Everett, and Cameron. He was predeceased by son Kirk and brothers Wister and Donald. Service will be held at Lansing United Methodist Church, Lansing, NY, on Saturday, January 5, 2019, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to JDRF or the American Cancer Society.
