A Rochester family says they’re a step closer to justice after the man accused of killing their loved one was indicted on new charges by a grand jury.
Jawuan Brumfield, 23, was beaten to death at a Geneva home in 2017.
One year after the incident, Jeffery Salone, Jr. was arrested and charged with manslaughter. But the charge was thrown out by a judge over a procedural error.
Brumfield’s loved ones packed into an Ontario County courthouse Wednesday as his alleged killer was indicted once again, this time on second-degree murder, manslaughter in the first-degree and tampering with physical evidence.
“I think the judge understands, we’re here for justice and that’s what we want,” said Brumfield’s stepfather, William Jones. “There’s a lot of things that I wish could happen to him but at the end of the day I’m not the judge or jury.”
Family and friends remember the 23-year-old as a good kid, standout basketball player and loving father.
“I loved him, everybody loved him. He was amazing,” said Jahara Duval, the mother of Brumfield’s now five-year-old son.
Duval started the Fatherless Kids Foundation in his honor to help kids who are coping with the loss of a father to violence.
