Throughout this decade, the Mets have negotiated some of their most significant player contracts with Brodie Van Wagenen. They have now completed an entirely different deal with one of professional baseball’s most powerful player agents.
The Mets have agreed with Van Wagenen to become their general manager, according to a source. The move will become official this week.
A 44-year-old whose clients include Jacob deGrom, Yoenis Cespedes, Tim Tebow, Ryan Zimmerman and Robinson Cano, Van Wagenen will become one of only a handful of agents to transition to a Major League front office. He will need to sever all ties to his agency; one source speculated that Van Wagenen may spend this weekend attempting to help CAA retain his most prominent clients, including deGrom. A second source said that Jeff Berry and Nez Balelo are prepared to take over as CAA’s lead agents once Van Wagenen departs..
