‘It takes all of us’: Cayuga County DWI program director awarded for efforts

At a DWI checkpoint last Friday night, officers from the Auburn Police Department and Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office were joined, as they often are, by Tracie Coulson.

Coulson, the county’s STOP-DWI deputy director, was recently honored by the state STOP-DWI Association with the William T. Smith Award for just that kind of willingness to go above and beyond in her work to stop drinking and driving.

“I think it’s important they know that it does mean something,” Coulson said of those roadside visits.

Being honored by her colleagues in the association — who regularly inspire her with everything they do in their programs — was “humbling,” she said.

Much of the day-to-day work for Coulson involves communicating with other STOP-DWI coordinators in different counties throughout the state and discussing which programs work for them and how they were implemented.

One idea from throughout the state, for example, is high school prom checkpoints, something that’s currently unfeasible for Cayuga County because of budget and manpower issues.
