Do you know this Ithaca boy? Cornell grad seeks to identify child in 1979 photo

For almost forty years, Gregory Tate has kept the photos boxed away.

Five small black-and-white images he printed in a college darkroom and matted himself.

Tate took the photos during the spring of 1979. It was his senior year and he was weeks away from graduating from Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS), where he majored in agronomy with a minor in international agricultural development.

But looking back, Tate said he wasn’t “your typical ag student.”

“I had lots of interests in lots of different areas,” he said.

Tate’s diverse interests lead him to take art classes like drawing and silk screening, as well as communications courses. During his last semester, he enrolled in COMM ARTS 440, an introductory photography class.

Tate and his fellow photo students completed simple weekly assignments for the class, shooting black and white film which they developed and printed in a darkroom.

But the midterm assignment was more involved: To complete a photo essay, which is a journalistic series of multiple images that tell a story.
