After incident in Auburn, NY Senate OKs bill to ban drone use near prisons

After a drone was recovered at Auburn Correctional Facility last year, the state Senate has once again passed legislation that would ban unmanned aerial vehicles from being used near prisons.

The bill sponsored by state Sen. Patty Ritchie would prohibit civilians from using drones within 1,000 feet of a state prison or local jail.

There would be an exception for the commercial use of drones by “any person or entity that the Federal Aviation Administration has authorized,” according to the bill’s text.

The legislation received unanimous support in the state Senate, where it passed by a 61-0 vote. It was approved by a 62-0 vote last year.
