Auburn PD: Officer injured after man barges into fight investigation

An Auburn police officer suffered a twisted ankle and other minor injuries after a suspect tussled with police as they were investigating an unrelated crime, according to the police chief.

Officers arrived at a report of a fight on Fort Street around 12:40 a.m. this morning. They found a victim with a cut on his head who said he was struck in the face by a man wielding a glass cup, Chief Shawn Butler said.

Police then met Darryl Ross, 56, who was also mildly injured during the fight. He was arrested and charged with assault, police said.

As police were investigating, another man arrived on scene, Diamante Swift, 21. Police told him he couldn’t enter the crime scene, and he fought with officers, slapping one of their hands away.

Police then moved to arrest Swift, and he continued to fight back, police said. At one point he fought an officer, causing the officer to twist his ankle and hurt his knee. The officer should be fine, the chief said.
