Messenger to Katko: Return NRA donations

One of U.S. Rep. John Katko's potential Democratic foes is urging him to return donations from the National Rifle Association, a leading gun rights group that has supported his campaigns for Congress.

Anne Messenger released a statement Monday in response to Katko's pledge last week to address gun violence. Katko, R-Camillus, said he would work with Democrats on legislation in response to the latest mass shooting that killed 17 people in Florida.

"I don't make this request lightly or frivolously, but if John Katko is serious about doing something about gun safety, he cannot be taking money from the very organization that singlehandedly has blocked every meaningful proposal that has been made to keep our kids safe from gun violence," Messenger, D-Manlius said.

Federal Election Commission records show Katko has received $11,900 from the NRA in the three election cycles he has been a candidate for Congress. As a challenger in 2014, he was endorsed by the NRA and received $1,000 from the organization's political action committee.
