Corning-Painted Post teacher helps student journalists fight for First Amendment rights

Mike Simons would be the first to tell you his advocacy for First Amendment rights isn’t being led by him — it’s being led by his students at Corning-Painted Post High School.

Along with teaching multiple classes on media and ethics, Simons is an adviser for a group yearbook students who are currently leading the fight to ensure student journalists have every First Amendment protection as their adult counterparts.

Simons, 39, is working with his students, state legislators and student-powered grassroots movement New Voices to get legislation passed in Albany that would guarantee high school and college journalists editorial control over student newspapers.
