Cheaper Fuel_ Higher Food
Wegmans is warning customers that increased demand for corn to fuel ethanol plants could lead to higher food prices. In its Sunday newspaper supplement, the supermarket chain said the demand for corn created by ethanol plants could drive up the price of corn used to feed beef cattle and the cost of high fructose corn syrup used in soda and other drinks. There are 116 ethanol plants in the US, with nearly that many still in the planning stages, including the proposed Empire Green Biofuels plant at the former Seneca Army Depot. New York Farm Bureau says the price of feed grain has nearly doubled in the past year. |
