RIT on TV News: Habitat Opening
WROC-TV (Channel 8) reports on the opening celebration for the new Habitat for Humanity house sponsored by Rochester Institute of Technology and constructed by RIT volunteers. ANCHOR: RIT unveiled its first green home today. Student volunteers have been building the house with Flower City Habitat for Humanity for months now. It is located on Whitney Street in Rochester's JOSANA neighborhood. The home includes solar panels, a tankless water heater, and soy-based foam insolation. There's a 95 percent energy efficient furnace and a special ventilation system to prevent heat loss. Construction started last winter and the home is now in the final stages of completion. ALEX SHIP: It's overwhelming at times but we struggled through and feel really great about what we produced. ANCHOR: April Randall is the soon-to-be homeowner. She is set to move in next month and RIT plans to work with Habitat for Humanity in the future to find ways to improve existing designs in a more sustainable way.

Syracuse: woman received kidney transplant
Stephanie Juskow, of Mattydale, was diagnosed with end-stage kidney disease in October, 2005, which means her kidneys were failing and she had to undergo kidney dialysis. She was also on the kidney transplant waiting list, but the wait for a donor organ, she said, ranges from 1 to 5 years. Early this month, one of her distant relatives, James Blum, 63, of Philadelphia, whom she's never met, suffered a stroke and designated one of his kidneys to her. Juskow talks about the experience and the generosity of Blum.

Pond hockey on the Erie Canal
About eighty hockey teams competed last weekend in Labatt USA's 2nd Annual Pond Hockey Tournament. It was the first year the tournament was held on the Erie Canal in Fairport. Several rinks were created with hay bails for dividers and wood with small slots for goals. Fans were able to take in the action form the canal path.

Off-road runners make their way around a 2.5 mile loop in the 6th annual "Cast A Shadow 6 Hour Snowshoe Relay," held at Greece Canal Park 1/30/10. Despite single-digit temperatures and a few inches of snow, about 60 runners participated in the relay, which began at 2 p.m. and went well into the frigid night.
