Date Added: 10/26/2009 Category: Local News Location: Syracuse Area RIT on TV News: Greenway GreenRide YNN reports on Rochester Institute of Technology's commemoration of the International Day of Climate Action, featuring a bike ride from downtown Rochester to the RIT campus. It may not always be the right weather for a bike ride around here, but as they say wait 5 minutes and it'll change. The rain Saturday morning didn't stop a group of environmentally conscious riders from hitting the trail. The purpose: to mark the International Day of Climate Action. "Once it gets into the colder weather, that's when a lot of people don't ride anymore, said James Kubiniec, part of the group that started at the Rundel Library in Downtown Rochester. But you can do it. Just gear up." They pedaled their way to RIT, but this wasn't your everyday bike ride. Today we are getting together for 350.org, said Jesse Harrington, a RIT Grad Student. It's a national move for climate change and climate action." The group, 350.org, wants to push world leaders to sign a treaty in Copenhagen in December that would cap carbon emissions. But this also has a local touch. "Today, specifically, we are riding to advocate bicycle lanes in Rochester," added Harrington. The hope is to get more bike lanes throughout Rochester and to cut down on car traffic by creating a covered bike path stretching from downtown Rochester to the University of Rochester and RIT. It would give people to choice to ride their bikes, regardless of whether it's raining or snowing. "There's no direct path from RIT to downtown for bikes besides this trail, added Harrington. It needs improvements and we'd like to bike all year round." I thought it was a little outside the box when I first heard about it, but it looks like it really has legs, and I am under it and I am really excited, said Rebecca Johnson, a biking enthusiast. The ride ended with a rally on the RIT campus, stressing the importance of alternate means of transportation. Its just the beginning for a new two wheel push. Date Added: 10/23/2009 Category: Local Sports Location: Syracuse Area RIT on TV News: Cycling Conference Preview WROC-TV (Channel 8) previews the Greenway Greenride and Bike Summit taking place at Rochester Institute of Technology on Oct. 24. Rochester is known for a lot of things, but how about being the bicycle capital of the world? Cycling could help problems like obesity, and solving problems like that are the point of this weekend's Greenway Greenride and Bike summit. The conference at RIT will begin with a bike ride downtown, but that wont be all. "Some city planners and some bicycle experts from the region tackling a number of developments, which could turn, strange to say, Rochester, into a world capital of recreational bicycling," said RIT professor Jon Schull. Schull says we're not far off, since Rochester already has a wide network of trials. "There are several trails that have taken different portions of what use to be a railway line," said Schull. Currently, there is more than five miles of bike trails. In preparation for the green conference, RIT students and faculty have begun creating experimental electric bikes that would be ideal for those trials. RIT estimates that 60% of car trips are less than a mile. They say if they could just get people to bike instead of drive, their lives would be healthier. "One of the things that we are doing is developing the notion that with canopies or snowblowers or bike tubes, you can make a year around transit way for bikes," said Schull. The conference begins on Saturday. They're expecting between 100 to 300 cyclists. Date Added: 10/21/2009 Category: Local Sports Location: Tompkins County RIT on TV News: Hurwitz Interview YNN interviews National Technical Institute for the Deaf president Alan Hurwitz about his decision to leave Rochester Institute of Technology to join Gallaudet University as its new president. There is mixed emotion on the campus of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at RIT. The school's president, Alan Hurwitz, announced over the weekend that he is leaving at the end of the year. After 40 years at NTID, Alan Hurwitz wasn't looking for a new job. "I had planned to make this actually my last position," says Hurwitz through an interpreter. But then Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. began a search for its next president. "They contacted me four or five times and each time I said 'no'," says Hurwitz. "Thank you, but no." Eventually they convinced him to meet and put him on the short list. Like NTID, Gallaudet is a well known school for the deaf and hard of hearing. But NTID is a technical university and one of eight colleges that make up the larger RIT. "Gallaudet is a stand alone university," says Hurwitz. "It is primarily a premiere liberal arts university." Over the weekend, Hurwitz and his wife were introduced to the Gallaudet community. "Everyone stood up and was applauding," says Hurwitz. "We were just so touched." Especially after Gallaudet's previous searches. In 2006 students, faculty and alumni staged campus protests about a presidential choice. In 1988 protestors formed the "Deaf President Now" movement, after numerous presidents who were not deaf. "I think in comparison to previous search processes I think this was a very very transparent process," says Hurwitz. In his 11 years as the head of NTID, Hurwitz says he's proud of the new outreach programs for high schoolers and even middle schoolers, as well as stronger ties with RIT's other colleges. "That allow our students to be able to get a solid foundation to prepare themselves for their baccalaureate studies," says Hurwitz. Hurwitz says another one of his major accomplishments is the school's student development center. It's not just a place for academics, but also social development, including a coffee bar, food court, meeting spaces, and rooms for student activities. "I think Rochester, if not the best is one of the most deaf friendly towns," says Hurwitz. The town where he and his wife raised their kids. A place he says they'll miss. "I think reality's starting to hit me now, but I'm very excited about this opportunity," says Hurwitz. "My wife and I are both very much looking forward to it." On Monday RIT announced that Professor James DeCaro will serve as interim president for one year while a national search is conducted for a permanent replacement. Hurwitz will stay on board until December to ease the transition. The man who headed up the Fuel Cell Research Lab in Honeoye Falls for 20 years is teaching a whole new generation. The GM Fuel Cell plant in Honeoye Falls is in Matt Fronk's rear-view mirror. He's moving forward in his new position at RIT, and Fronk says it will allow him to focus on more than the development of green technology for cars. He is a veteran in the industry, and he'll be using his 30 years experience to teach students and employees on fuel cells, hybrids and biofuels. Fronk says the Fuel Cell program at GM is in good shape, and he believes his work at RIT could help further the technology. "We have a lot of good work going on with the car companies, but not much support from the government. I think RIT can play a role in trying to connect the dots, and that will be one of my responsibilities," said Fronk. Fronk plans to look in his rear-view mirror from time to time to connect the dots. "The plan is to still work closely with Honeoye Falls and other companies to move this ahead, and have effective commercial product down the road," said Fronk. Fronk's formal title is the director of the Center for Sustainable Mobility. The department is part of RIT's Center for Integrated Manufacturing Studies.
