| Napoleon Dynamite |
| Review Posted 12/30/04 |
This indie favorite follows Napoleon Dynamite (Jon Heder), a quirky, ninja-loving
teenager growing up in the far reaches of Idaho. Napoleon's life gets complicated
when his shady Uncle Rico (John Gries) shows up, a shy girl (Tina Majorino)
starts showing him some attention and his best friend Pedro (Efren Ramirez)
decides to run for school president. Nominated for a Grand Jury Prize at Sundance
in 2004.

Napoleon
Dynamite ( Jon Heder ) is not your average protagonist , this one
comes fully equipped with seventies style glasses, a pegasus t-shirt,
some sweet moon boots and a rad trapper keeper.
This is a bizarre comedy about a socially
inept high school student trying to survive living in a world
not quite ready for someone like him. For me the film delivered
non-stop laughs, providing viewers with tons of unforgettable
catch phrases such as "I
caught you a delicious bass". I don't know how anyone could
not delight in Napoleon's "sweet skills", such as nunchucks, tetherball,
and drawing "ligers" (you'll have to see the movie to understand).
I laughed so hard I cried when Napoleon "got down" in his hysterical
dance number done to Jamiroquai's "Canned Heat." No doubt
about it, Jon Heder is an absolute riot!
Napoleon Dynamite will surely divide audiences,
some people just won't get it. But, my personal opinion is that
this movie was awesomely refreshing and has "cult classic" written
all over it.
Note To Viewer: Stay in your seat and watch the credits, there's
an extra scene that I am sure most people missed.

I
have to say, not nearly enough teen movies end in dance-offs
these days, and "Napoleon Dynamite" looks like it's ready to bring
back the tradition. Bravo, I say. Bravo to the dance number, that
is, as for the rest of the movie - I can honestly tell you I am
not altogether sure.
I am generally a fan of the Nerdy-Underdog-and-Misfit-Friends-Buck-the-Popular-Crowd-and-Succeed-On-Their-Own-Terms
movie. However, the Nerdy Underdog is usually more likeable, or
at the very least more understandable. Napoleon is not just weird,
it's more like he is trying to be even more weird than he already
is naturally.
This is mostly an unknown cast, with the
exception of Uncle Rico played by Jon Gries and Deb (Tina Majorino - I'll give someone
five bucks if they can tell me where else they have seen her WITHOUT
looking it up. It took me the entire movie to figure it out.) The
quirkiness, the soundtrack, and the cinematography are all interesting
elements on their own. I still cannot say if they really "work" all
together, but I will watch this movie once or twice more, to see
if I can figure it out.
