Kinsey

Review Posted 05/27/05

Liam Neeson provides a fascinating portrait of theorist and zoologist Dr. Alfred Kinsey, whose name has been associated with human sexuality ever since he interviewed thousands of people about their sex lives and released his findings in a groundbreaking 1948 book, Sexual Behavior in the Human Male . The book caused ripples in the scientific community and paved the way for further inquiry into the subject. Costars Laura Linney and Peter Sarsgaard.

Cady's Take:

As a young, virgin, college professor, Alfred Kinsey (Liam Neeson), marries Clara (Laura Linney). In an intentionally awkward scene he and his wife discover on their wedding night that not only do they not know what they're doing, but there's nowhere for them to turn to figure out just how to do it.

When he later begins teaching a class on human sexuality, he realizes just how little research actually exists. So, Kinsey and his team of researchers including Clyde Martin (Peter Sarsgaard), Wardell Pomeroy (Chris O'Donnell) and Paul Gebhard (Timothy Hutton) travel across the country interviewing literally thousands of people about their sexual habits. This later resulted in the publication of Kinsey's works, "Sexual Behavior in the Human Male" (1948) and "Sexual Behavior in the Human Female" (1953).

This is a movie for the mature and open-minded only, for there are several "shocking" moments throughout. With that said, this is a smart, serious, yet often very funny film. Much of the movie's strength lies in its portrayal of a many-sided genius; Kinsey is definitely an unlikely pioneer. Neeson is once again fabulous, and even though Linney's character was bland, the actress is hard to dislike.

I thought we should have been provided with a little more oomph from a story revolving around sex. But, there are not many negative things one could say about this film, especially considering the outstanding supporting cast. Oliver Platt, Tim Curry and John Lithgow along with the Sarsgaard, O'Donnell and Hutton were magnificent; all manage to provide strong, fully realized characters.

Kyle's Take:

"Kinsey" is a very, very good movie. Liam Neeson plays Alfred Kinsey, the famed scientist whose studies of sex showed that Americans were, well, pervs. Not in a bad way! His studies revealed that in private Americans were living some less-than-Ozzie-and-Harriet moments between the sheets.

Dr. Kinsey is revealed as a man whose father (played by John Lithgow) was distant and disappointed in him. His own sexual experiences are limited, and through his studies he develops a detached view of sex, that ultimately leads to problems when people (in the world and in his life) perceive his non-judgmental position as tacit approval to no-holds-barred sexual exploration. Eventually this perception of Kinsey as "sick" overshadows the initial, explosive reception his work was receiving; combined with the atmosphere of suspicion brought about by the McCarthy hearings, and the (false) link of Kinsey's work to communist theory, Kinsey ends up distraught and discredited.

A thoroughly enjoyable biopic, "Kinsey" provides valuable information, some very funny moments, and extremely full character development. Perhaps a bit long, and slow moving in some parts, this is an especially relevant movie in today's cultural climate, that has a renewed focus on sex and morality in mainstream American life.
