In Good Company (2005)

Review Posted 06/10/05

An ad salesman, Dan (Dennis Quaid), must take a junior position after a corporate shakedown. Worse, he now reports to a much-younger boss, Carter (Topher Grace), a business school grad who espouses a sales approach branded Synergy that's at odds with Dan's old-school style. Although they don't see eye to eye, the two must get along, a mandate made more difficult when Carter becomes smitten with Dan's daughter (Scarlett Johansson).

Cady's Take:

Dennis Quaid plays Dan Foreman, a 51 year old "corporate dinosaur" that has been the head of sales at Sports American magazine for over 20 years. Although he makes a very good living, he still has to take out a loan to pay for his oldest daughter Alex's (Scarlett Johansson) tuition at New York University. And when his wife Ann (Marg Helgenberger) tells him she is pregnant he worries about where the money will come from.

So, you can imagine how insane he goes when he finds out his company has been acquired in a corporate takeover, and his new boss Carter Duryea (Topher Grace) a 26 year old prodigy tells him he is getting demoted and must take a pay-cut.

Quaid, who I think gets better as he gets older, effortlessly plays Dan as charming, sexy, bedraggled and annoyed. Topher is also extremely good in his role, although I thought he was more impressive in the little-seen movie P.S. with Laura Linney. Nevertheless, I am actually beginning to like him in leading roles. With that being said, it is Dennis Quaid who owns this movie.

The previews lead you to believe that this is a film about how Quaid's character reacts when his young boss begins dating his 18-year-old daughter. This is completely false. In Good Company is about 2 men, a good father and a boy who grew up without one, who learn to re-evaluate their values and goals, both in the office and at home.

I had no expectations from this film so it turned out to be quite a nice surprise.  It is fresh, witty and thoughtful - a sweet little movie that I could view again.

Kyle's Take:

"In Good Company" was a welcome surprise. I expected a slapstick-y romantic comedy, and instead I got a movie with real characters and a plausible storyline that remained consistent, but provided the characters plenty of room to make their own decisions. This is a story about how corporate America destroys Americans on a daily basis; jobs are lost, positions are cut back, salaries are reduced, all in the name of a "bottom line". The bottom line is very important in this movie, and is often referred to when a scene is attempting to underline the perilous nature of the corporate world.

Dan Foreman (Dennis Quaid), a sales executive for a sports magazine, is suddenly confronted with the marching of time when at once he is demoted at work and replaced by Carter (Topher Grace), and his wife (Marg Helgenberger) announces she is pregnant, as his oldest daughter Alex (Scarlett Johanssen) announces she is transferring to NYU from SUNY.

"In Good Company" is a good movie - the characters are relatable, the family and the workplace relationships seem plausible, and Dennis Quaid and Topher Grace find a nice relationship in the middle of a complicated web of relationships and commitments. This is a good prospect for your weekend movie choice!
