Finding this huge Cooper's Hawk sitting on my Bluebird nesting box at our pond in South Bristol on Wednesday morning was quite a surprise. This large hawk is a threat to the smaller birds that come to my feeders and might explain why the Bluebirds suddenly disappeared in late June.

In 1918, Deere & Company, a farm equipment company based in Moline, Illinois purchased the Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company of Iowa which then became known as the John Deere Tractor Company. But tractors produced by the company continued to be sold under the Waterloo Boy name until 1923. This handsome heron had just polished off a fish from a pond in South Bristol on Monday around noon and was waiting for the rain to end. Or maybe he was waiting for another tasty morsel to swim by!

Everything was lush and green thanks to all the recent rain at Buttermilk Falls on Sunday afternoon. The swimming are was closed due to high bacteria in the water, but it was a lovely day for a walk!
