Camp Babcock Hovey in Ovid is celebrating it's 75th year of being open to campers. One of the last events to commemorate the 75th anniversary was held this past weekend. The 14th Challenge Trophy Camporee had all of the members of the BSA including Venturing units, Troops, and Packs camping and participating in as many events as possible. One of those events was a 2 man cross cut, demonstrated here by 2 Webelos scouts.

" Nocturnally Yours! "
This beautiful, little Northern Saw-whet owl was sighted at Braddock Bay Bird Observatory, believed to have just arrived from Canada by crossing Lake Ontario. Part of her defense is to stay still, bringing no attention to herself. Saw-whet's weigh about 4 ounces, have a wingspan of about 17" and are about 7" tall. They feed mostly on woodland mice and are strictly nocturnal. If you hear what sounds to be a truck with its reverse alarm dinging and you're near woods at night - it is probably a Saw-whet you're hearing! This gravid female is moments from attaching her egg case to this late-blooming sunflower. Next spring several hundred hatchlings will emerge. Praying mantis' are excellent natural predators to pests like the Japanese beetle. A welcome insect in my gardens.
