" Birding Community Excited in Seneca Falls "
The birding community is all a twitter about a new species that's been spotted at the Seneca Meadows Wetlands Preserve on Black Brook Road in Seneca Falls. Multiple sightings of a pair of Dickcissels, a bird that typically only breeds in the central U.S., perked the interest of Jay McGowan of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. In early July, he made the trip up to the preserve to gather sound recordings and photos of the mating pair. In a statement regarding the sighting, McGowan said, "We see off-track migrants somewhere in the area almost every year, but only rarely for more than a day, and most people never have a chance to see them in the state. To have some that are not only staying put enough to go and see but also apparently attempting to breed is a rarity indeed. The habitat at Seneca Meadows is perfect for them, very similar to where they would nest in Kansas or Iowa."
