" Iwo Jima Redux in Waterloo "
World War II veteran Ernest Beckwith watched the Marines raise the flag on Iwo Jima in 1945. On Saturday, he saw it again as the students from Freedom Village in Lakeville reenacted that moment on their float in the Celebrate Commemorate parade. Beckwith spoke to the young men and then spent a moment in quiet reflection before joining other World War II vets on a float and special tribute to the village's 46 living WWII veterans. " Newark Residents Visit Assemblyman Oaks "
Jean Hoe and her daughter Alison traveled to Albany May 24, as guests of Assemblyman Bob Oaks. The Hoes were the successful bidders for a lunch that was offered during a silent auction fundraiser for St. Michael’s School in Newark in April. The Hoes and Assemblyman Oaks sandwiched in lunch between visits to the Assemblyman's Albany legislative office, the observation deck on the 42nd floor of the Corning Tower (the tallest building in Albany) and the New York State Museum. Assemblyman Oaks also accompanied the Hoes on a brief tour of the New York State Capitol, including the Senate and Assembly Chambers, until he left to attend the day's legislative session. Jean is a nurse at the Wayne County Nursing Home. Alison is a finishing her junior year at Newark High School.

Barbara Rotz and Kaaren Gerlach put the finishing touches on a banner saluting Waterloo's 41 living World War II veterans. The vets will be honored in the annual Celebrate Commemorate parade at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 28, and at a luncheon in their honor hosted by the Waterloo Veterans of Foreign Wars. “Many times we take our freedoms for granted. We remain free because of the sacrifices our soldiers have made," Gerlach said. "It's time to say thank you. They fought hard for us.”

Don’t expect George Slocum to settle in to a rocking chair anytime soon. The Keuka College maintenance man may technically be retiring Sunday after 50 years of employment on campus but the word “retirement” is hardly in his vocabulary, let alone his character. He’s held his second job, a part-time shift cleaning the Keuka Park post office after working 7 – 3:30 daily on campus, for close to 35 years.

Seneca Falls Business Association had its first “Super Saturday Sidewalk Sale” this past weekend and it was a success. There were sidewalk vendors on the street, food booths, music, businesses with doors open and museums free of charge. South Seneca fifth grade students learned about converting wind power into electricity through the use of windmills and turbines. Students used the steps of the engineering design process to develop and construct blades for a windmill using simple wind turbine models and performed experiments testing each variable such as size, shape, material, length, pitch, number of blades and weight. Former NASCAR driver Kyle Petty signed a lot of autographs Saturday when he and 175-other motorcyclists made a pit stop at Emerson Park in on Owasco Lake. This year’s charity ride started Saturday in Lake Placid, NY and ends next week in Florida. The ride originally was targeted to benefit children's hospitals and has raised over $14 million in 16 years. But four years after Adam Petty's fatal crash — on Father's Day 2004 — stock car racing's first family opened Victory Junction Gang Camp, a summer camp in North Carolina for children with life-threatening illnesses.
