11th Year of Grassroots Healing Arts
Press Release from JoAnn Kingsley, LMT, Watkins Glen
Wednesday, July 26, 2006

Special Thanks to all who volunteered, participated and
contributed to the 11th year of GrassRoots Healing Arts !

Another great year for the GrassRoots Festival as the Healing Arts Crew wrapped up on Sunday night with backstage massage for a few staff members and musicians while Donna the Buffalo brought the music to a close on the Infield Stage. Four days of various free bodywork styles was well received again. GrassRoots 2006 celebrated the 11th year that Healing Arts has had a strong presence at the annual festival at the fairgrounds in Trumansburg.

Nestled amongst the residential neighborhood commonly referred to as “tent city”, the Healing Arts tent offers a respite for hundreds of festival participants each year. A smaller private space behind the infield stage allows musicians and staff an opportunity to relax and hopefully become pain free with a few minutes of gentle massage or deep tissue focused work.

The Healing Arts line up this year included some new practitioners and topics. The Brother Lemonade Breast Cancer Initiative worked with couples and individuals, male and female, to teach breast exam techniques that encourage healthy relationships and increased awareness of what lumps feel like and where in breast tissue they tend to form.

Also, gentle chiropractic work, including spinal analysis, acupuncture, reflexology, acupressure, sound massage, reiki, tarot readings, cranial sacral therapy, essential oils, trigger point myofacial release, intuitive healing through kinesthetic aura sensation, dharma coaching, as well as swedish and deep tissue massage were demonstrated in the four day integrative healing arts center under the tent near the horse barn.

It was quite impressive to witness very dedicated volunteers standing in ankle deep water offering their services after Saturday’s rainstorm. GrassRoots Healing Arts is staffed completely by volunteers of the festival. Afterall, it is the attitude of volunteerism and creative community that makes the GrassRoots Festival so special for so many of us.

As the coordinator of the Healing Arts area for the past 11 years I would personally like to thank the hundreds of individuals that make this such a positive experience every year. Volunteers from the Corning area, Ithaca area and Watkins Glen are the annual participants while others who traveled this year from Texas, Maine, and Downstate NY brought us new blood and enthusiasm.

New volunteers are needed each year. The Healing Arts staff (practitioners as well as people who staff the information table) has learned over the years that the opportunity to offer free hands-on healing arts services to the festival participants, musicians, organizers and staff is a great feeling and a wonderful way to really be part of making the festival. We encourage you to volunteer next year. The festival always needs new kind, loving and generous volunteers to share in the fun of creating our four-day creative community. Contacting the festival office in the spring through the website ( is a good way to sign up to volunteer. Thanks again to everyone!
