For the fourth straight time since 2003, the Canal Cup will reside at the Seneca Falls Country Club. The top golfers from the SFCC defeated the top players from Silver Creek GC in Waterloo in a 36-holes Ryder Cup style format by the score of 19 1/2 to 10 1/2 Sunday at Silver Creek GC in Waterloo, NY. The Seneca Falls Country Club team needed just 15 points to retain the Canal Cup which they secured early during the final set of individual matches at about 5:10 pm Sunday night. The SFCC team jumped out to an early lead after the morning alternate shot matches taking 4 points out of a possible six. During the second set of matches, best ball, the SFCC extended their lead by taking 4 1/2 out of a possible six points. After 18 holes and 12 matches, SFCC led 8 1/2 to 3 1/2. Rain began to fall as the golfers prepared for the third set of matches. In the scramble on the front nine Silver Creek failed to mount a charge as SFCC won the scramble portion by a score of 3 1/2 to 2 1/2. This meant that Seneca Falls needed just 3 points out of the remaining 12 available points to retain the Canal Cup. The rain continued to fall as the golfers began play on the back nine at Silver Creek but it was a mere formality at that point and when Doc Hilimire closed out Rock Stein on the 16th green the SFCC had 15 points, enough to retain the cup. In the end, SFCC took the individual matches 7 1/2 to 4 1/2. Jimmy Williams III captained his first Canal Cup team to a victory. Mike Burdsall, 2005 Silver Creek Club Champion captained the Silver Creek squad. Doug Brown and Doc Hilimire led the way for the SFCC team winning four points a piece. Jason Perrault and Jim Sandlas notched 3 1/2 points each. Randy Logue led Silver Creek with 2 1/2 points. Full results below. Match winners are highlighted in red.
The two clubs each select their teams from an internal qualification process which changes year to year. For the SFCC, the previous year's club champion sets the selection process. For Silver Creek, the 36 hole club championship tournament is the primary factor used to determine the team members. Next year's event is scheduled for September 30, 2006 at the Seneca Falls County Club.
