Health Insurance and Risk Management for Farmers and Agribusiness
Cornell Cooperative Extension (CCE) of Seneca County in cooperation with Agri-Services Agency (ASA) will host an educational seminar on Monday, December 7 at 8:30 a.m. The seminar will include information about public health insurance programs and risk management for farmers and agribusinesses. ASA, a subsidiary of Dairylea Cooperative Inc., was recently awarded a grant by the New York State Health Foundation (NYSHealth) to help farmers and agribusiness owners obtain health insurance coverage. Access to quality, affordable health care is a critical need for farmers and agribusinesses in New York State. In fact, a recent survey by the nonprofit Access Project says farmers pay twice as much as non-farmers for insurance and out-of-pocket expenses. As a result they constitute a substantial portion of the state’s uninsured. CCE of Seneca County has been delivering education and support to the agriculture sector in Seneca County since 1924. CCE is the local presence of Cornell University, the land grant college of New York State, and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture of the United States Department of Agriculture. Cornell Cooperative Extension links the research and extension efforts at Cornell University and the NYS Agricultural Experiment Station to provide the knowledge necessary to maximize the value of our agricultural resources to benefit the quality of life for individuals, families and communities. ASA was created to bring affordable insurance programs to farmers and other agribusiness owners. The programs are underwritten by national insurance carriers offering coverage to the agricultural community throughout the Northeast. ASA understands agriculture, having helped thousands of farmers and related business owners with their benefits programs for more than 40 years. NYSHealth is a private Foundation dedicated to improving the health of all New Yorkers. NYSHealth has a three-part mission: expanding health insurance coverage, increasing access to high-quality health care services, and improving public and community health by educating New Yorkers about health issues and empowering communities to address them. RSVP: December 4, 2009. Coffee & donuts/bagels will be available.
