Seneca County in the Civil War Lecture
The Geneva Historical Society's 2014 Fall Lecture Series kicks off Wednesday, September 24 with "Seneca County and the Civil War," a presentation by county historian Walter Gable. Based on his book of the same name, the program will explore the stories of the people of Seneca County who endured the Civil War years. While unique to Seneca County, their stories reflect the common experiences of many people in upstate New York during the war. Gable will share the tales of the many brave men who left home to fight, including solider John Hoster, who was imprisoned at the infamous Andersonville prison camp. At home, the county's farmers fed Lincoln’s hungry army, and its industries provided materiel for the war effort. After the war, Waterloo’s celebration in remembrance of fallen soldiers was replicated around the country, and the village is now recognized as the official birthplace of Memorial Day.

Volunteers: Must register online at www.fingerlakesmudrun.com. Volunteers will receive training at a team meeting in September and must sign a spectator and volunteer waiver. Details: The Finger Lakes Mud Run at Everest Park is a challenging, military-style trail run that’s intended to pit participants against one of THREE EXTREME COURSES. Yes, THREE! Each wave of participants joins a stampede of literally hundreds who’ll trudge through thick field grasses, over wooded underbrush, down and out of deep gullies, and ultimately face jaw-dropping obstacles––each designed to encourage teamwork and camaraderie. The Finger Lakes Mud Run has THREE courses in 2014! Our first is the 5K short course, which is designed for those who’re looking for a fun challenge, but aren’t quite ready for the big time! Our second course is the 14K long course that explores over 750 acres of dense forest, sun-baked fields, and terrain that even scares the wildlife! Our third course, introduced in 2013, is the ever-popular Mini Muddy. This course lets kids ages 6-12 get completely covered in mud, just like the rest of the family! The Finger Lakes Mud Run remains a volunteer-organized event that uses 100% of its net proceeds to extend the mission of Everest Park by offering a restful retreat for families of children who are experiencing life-altering health issues.
